Nice sunny, calm day offshore today. We made our way out to Stellwagen Bank and found a humpback whale named Scylla. The whales were not feeding at the surface much but we did find a Cory shearwater that was feeding on sandlance.
Scylla was surfacing pretty regularly and was an excellent sight to see. We moved on and found Tongs who was feeding down deep, showing us the bubbles surfacing slowly at the surface.
Every once in a while Tongs would lunge at the surface and strain but one of the surfacings was right near the boat and we could see the straining occurring right under the water. The bubbles flowing out of the mouth of this whale was quite intriguing seeing this altered feeding technique.
Every whale has their own little flare for how they act and behave. They each have their own personalities and while they are feeding here they show us the best behaviors.
2 pm Trip: Son - Leah
On the afternoon trip the water was even calmer which made the whales behaviors calm as well. The whales were having a lazy day. The first whale we saw was a juvenile whale that doesn't have a name yet but then we moved on to Nile and Pitcher.
Most of the whales we saw were resting or logging at the surface. We had Nile and Pitcher together and they were traveling slowly around. There weren't that many birds around this afternoon and not to much bait for the whales to feed on.
Here's a picture of Pitcher going down on a dive showing us her flukes.
